Now customers in Dallas, Baltimore, and other major cities can get a product on the same day they order it...for a price, of course.

Need an item from Amazon before the day is over? The retailer is now offering same-day delivery in six more cities across the US.

As of Wednesday, consumers in Baltimore, Dallas, Indianapolis, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. can place a same-day delivery order for any one of more than 1 million products through "="" feature"="">Amazon's "Get it Today" feature. As long as you order any eligible item by a certain time, usually noon or 1pm depending on the city, you'll get it at your doorstep by 9PM local time.

The cost? Amazon Prime subscribers pay $5.99 for the entire order. Non-Prime customers have to shell out $9.98 for the first item and 99 cents for each additional item.

Like any online retailer, Amazon faces a challenge with shipping. The company wants to draw in customers by promising quick delivery on products so buyers don't just head over to the local department store when they need something relatively fast. But third-party shipping costs continue to rise. So Amazon has to manage what it charges customers for same-day or speedy delivery to ensure that the benefits are worth the expenses and the effort.

Amazon had already offered same-day delivery in New York and Philadelphia, but apparently the service was not fully implemented or expanded until now. Altogether, same-day delivery is now available in Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Phoenix, the San Francisco/Bay Area, Seattle, Boston, Chicago, Greater Washington D.C. and Baltimore, Indianapolis, New York City (and parts of New Jersey), and Philadelphia.

Customers who want to check out the products up for same-day delivery can browse the categories on the Same-Day delivery page. You'll find such categories as computers, printers, books, home appliances, first aid, and travel accessories.

You can also simply search for a product on Amazon. Depending on your location, a "Get It Today" filter should appear on the left side of your screen. Select that option, and Amazon will refresh the list to show only items available for same-day delivery. You need to be logged into your Amazon account, and the option will appear only if your address is in one of the supported cities.
