Alleged pirate loses site
An international consortium shut down a Hong Kong Internet site that sold what was believed to be illegally copied versions of software on the Web.
The site, known as the Sammy Game Center, offered CD-ROM versions of software for export to the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, and Sweden, according to Reuters news service. The software included games, business, entertainment, and multimedia applications.
The site was closed by the Business Software Alliance in cooperation with the Alliance Against CD-ROM Theft. The owner of the Web site has since apologized in writing to both organizations.
Nevertheless, the groups are nevertheless attempting to terminate the owner's contract with his unnamed Internet service provider. The organizations alleged that more than 70 software titles had been illegally copied. Pirated software on each CD-ROM was valued at $20,000.
