Agere announces reorganization

Optical component maker Agere Systems announced Thursday plans to reorganize its business along two main market segments. The company's infrastructure systems group will focus on making chips and components for Agere's telecom equipment customers. Agere will also consolidate the research and development as well as the marketing activities for its formerly separate component and chip businesses into the infrastructure group. Agere will also form a client systems group, which will make chips for wireless equipment like cell phones and produce cards that when installed allow PCs to communicate on wireless networks. The group also makes chips for computer data storage equipment. Agere's operations group will be responsible for the supply chain management and the manufacturing activities of both the infrastructure and client groups. The heads of all three divisions will report to John Dickson, Agere's CEO.
