Acrobat Office plug-in/Norton AntiVirus conflict

CNET staff
MacFixIt reader Tom Zito, who has had consistent problems with the PDF plug-in for Microsoft Office installed by Adobe Acrobat Professional 6.0.x, finally received confirmation from Adobe that the cause is a conflict with Norton AntiVirus 9.0:

"Using the 'Convert to Adobe PDF' icon that Acrobat Pro installs in the Word and Excel toolbars [which calls the Acrobat PDFMaker plug-in] hangs every time when I use it, always as the progress bar approaches the right end of the progress box, whereas there is no problem using [OS X's built-in] 'Save as PDF...' function in the print [dialog] box. The former reports an error message to a log:

%%[ Error: ioerror; OffendingCommand: showpage ]%%
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

"After talking with Adobe tech support yesterday, this is a documented problem caused by a conflict with auto-protect in NAV 9.0. The work-around is to select 'Adobe PDF' in the printer drop down menu in the Print dialog, which routes the file to Acrobat Distiller."
