After purchasing 3D sugar printing startup The Sugar Lab, 3D Systems is bringing a 3D food printer to the consumer market.
The Sugar Lab — a startup created by architecture graduates-turned-3D printing confectioners Kyle and Liz von Hasseln — was purchased by 3D Systems back in September of last year and, while the company was selling the produce on its Cubify service, there was always going to be more it wanted to do with the printer the husband-and-wife team had developed.
And here it is: two new kitchen-ready 3D printers, the ChefJet and the ChefJet Pro. Like the CJP 3D printer the von Hasselns' modified, it can create delicately architectural sugar sculptures that you can eat.
The ChefJet prints single-colour confections inside a build volume of 8x8x6 inches, and will hit the market in the latter half of 2014 priced below US$5000.
The ChefJet Pro can create multi-coloured objects with a volume up to 10x14x8 inches and will be available priced somewhere below US$10,000.
Both printers come with software optimised for the non-CAD user to be able to create their own designs, and can print in a variety of flavours including chocolate, vanilla, mint, sour apple, cherry and watermelon. In addition to the sugar material developed from the von Hasselns' formula, both printers can also print with chocolate.
