1 million Android devices sold every day, 400m in total

1 million people get a new Android phone or tablet every day -- and a total of 400 million Android devices have been sold so far.

A million people get a new Android phone or tablet every day. As Google unveils the new version of Android, version 4.1 Jelly Bean, the search giant reveals that a total of 400 million Android devices have been sold so far.

That's a lot of phones. This time last year, the Big G said it was activating 400,000 Android phones each day, so it's a big jump.

Phones like the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy S2 and HTC One X are leading the charge, but there are Android phones available at almost any size and almost any price -- for a smart phone anyway.

The Samsung Galaxy S and S2 alone have sold 50 million -- and that's not including the S3, which is expected to sell 10 million by the end of July. No wonder Android is outselling the iPhone.

Google revealed the nugget of information at Google I/O, the annual developer conference in San Francisco. The Big G also unveiled Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the latest version of Android software for phones and tablets, and the Google Nexus 7 tablet.

Jelly Bean will be available for selected phones in mid-July.
