Samsung clears up iPad 2 Smart Cover controversy

The company says that it's working with Galaxy Tab accessory maker Anymode to remove the company's Smart Cover-like Smart Case from its Web site.

Samsung has distanced itself from a Galaxy Tab accessory maker that developed a screen cover mimicking the functionality of Apple's iPad 2 Smart Cover.

Dubbed the Anymode Smart Case, the accessory can be attached to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and double as a screen cover and folded stand. The accessory, which was discovered yesterday by 9to5mac, comes in multiple colors.

According to Samsung, it generally "reviews and approves all accessories produced by partners" for its mobile products. When it does so, it gives those products the "Designed for Samsung Mobile" designation. In the case of Anymode's Smart Case, it did nothing of the sort.

"In this case, approval was not given to Anymode for the accessory to feature this official designation," Samsung wrote in a blog post today.

In addition, Samsung said it's now "working with Anymode to address this oversight." The company said Anymode has removed the product, which "has not been sold," from its sales Web site.

The cases from Apple and Anymode aren't the only products that seem to resemble each other. Another company, InCase, sells the "Convertible Magazine Jacket" for Apple's iPad, which can be used as a cover and a stand. The InCase option, which retails for $49.95, was on sale before Apple started selling its $39 Smart Cover.
