Facebook named best place to work
The supersized social network comes out of nowhere to best last year's winner, Southwest Airlines, according to employee ratings submitted to Glassdoor.com.
Facebook is the world's top social network, and now it's the best place to work, a study from career community site Glassdoor.com has found.
According to the site, Facebook earned a company rating of 4.6, besting last year's top employer, Southwest Airlines, which earned a 4.4 rating this year. Those businesses were followed by, in order, Bain & Co., General Mills, and Edelman. Facebook wasn't even on the list last year.
When it comes to the technology industry, it seems Web sites make employees happier than their offline counterparts. Overstock took the ninth spot in Glassdoor's study, while Careerbuilder secured the 11th position. Shutterfly held the 14th spot in the study.
Apple moved up a bit from its rank of 22 last year to 20 this year with a 3.7 employee satisfaction rating. Google, which was in 14th place last year, dropped down to 30th this year, earning a 3.7 rating. Adobe Systems also declined from 29th place last year to 39th place this year.
Glassdoor.com publishes job listings, salary information, and company reviews, and also gives workers a forum in which to opine about their employers and CEOs. The information is posted anonymously by employees and job seekers, and the site often functions as a place for the disgruntled to vent.
Perhaps not surprisingly given Facebook's rating, Mark Zuckerberg appears to be very well liked by his employees, earning a 96 percent approval rating for CEOs in Glassdoor's results. Google's Eric Schmidt matched Zuckerberg, while Apple CEO Steve Jobs was a notch ahead at 97 percent. Adobe's Shantanu Narayen got a 73 percent approval rating.
Also today, Zuckerberg was named Time's Person of the Year.
