Alexa has a lot of friends -- and more than 1,000 third-party skills

The list of capabilities for Amazon's digital assistant just keeps growing.

We've known for a while that Alexa was talented.

The digital assistant built into Amazon devices such as the Amazon Echo and the Amazon Fire TV has become a favorite of ours in the CNET Smart Home because of how well it works with third-party smart home devices from the likes of SmartThings, Ecobee3 and Big Ass Fans.

Today, Amazon announced the scope of Alexa's talents, and it's impressive. Alexa now has more than 1,000 third-party skills, including the ability to order pizza from Dominos, summon an Uber and place an order for flowers. You can also play games like Jeopardy and a choose-your-own-adventure-style Batman game.

The volume of skills speaks to the ease of use of Alexa's open developer kit and to the growing popularity of Alexa and the Amazon Echo. We know Google has a competitor to the Echo on the way, and we have reason to believe Apple does too. As far as third-party integrations are concerned, they'll have a lot of catching up to do.
