Norton security 'embedded' in new wireless router platform

Broadcom's 802.11ac router has Norton's home security suite built in to protect all connected devices.

The partnership between Broadcom and Norton puts the security on the router itself, thereby protecting anything that connects to the internet via this device.

Broadcom's BCM4708x is a System on a Chip (SoC) built to power 802.11ac (also known as 5G) wireless routers for the home and small office market. 802.11ac is a wireless networking standard that can theoretically offer wireless transfer speeds of over 1Gbps.

With the rise of connected handheld devices — an average of 4.8 in each home, according to ABI Research — Norton hopes that its Broadcam approach will provide home users with a single, simplified security solution.

"With more and more internet-enabled devices in the home, consumers need to be confident that they can use any device seamlessly and securely, while protecting the stuff that matters most to them," said Dave Cole, Symantec's vice president of product management, in a media release.

Broadcom and Norton are working with manufactures, and devices utilising the security technology are expected to be available in the "first half of 2013".
