Zune software bust

Jul 25, 2009 11:47AM PDT

I recently bought a Zune MP3 player, and now I cannot open the software to transfer files from my computer onto the device. I get a message that says "Zune encountered and eror and needs to close, for instructions on correcting this error, open the URL:

http//go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=126687"

If I do this, the page immediatle sends me to a microsoft search page and then to the RegCleen that so many people on this board seem to warn against.

Can anyone please advise?

thank you

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953486?sd=zune was where I landed after clicking on your link.

But if that fails read Grif's advice at http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6122_102-0.html?threadID=328220#2968150

Good luck!

Bob

To resolve this problem, try the following methods in the order in which they are presented.
Back to the top
Method 1: Run the Zune Media Collection Reset Tool

1. Visit the following Web site to download the reset tool:
http://go.microsoft.com/FWLink?LinkID=105882 (http://go.microsoft.com/FWLink?LinkID=105882)
2. Run the reset tool.
3. Follow the steps in the wizard.
4. Restart the Zune software. The Zune software will have to add your collection back into your library. Depending on the size of your library, this may take anywhere from several minutes to an hour.

If this did not resolve your issue, go to Method 2.

Back to the top
Method2: Install the latest version of the .NET Framework
Install .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1). To download .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ab99342f-5d1a-413d-8319-81da479ab0d7 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ab99342f-5d1a-413d-8319-81da479ab0d7)
If you experience an error when you try to install .NET 3.5 SP1, go to Method 3.
Back to the top
Method 3: Remove and reinstall the .NET Framework
You will have to remove all instances of the .NET Framework and its hotfixes. You must remove all versions of the .NET Framework, from the most recent version to the earliest version installed on the computer. For example, you would uninstall the following versions of the .NET Framework in the following descending order:

* .NET Framework 3.5
* .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
* .NET Framework 2.0 SP1
* .NET Framework 1.1

Step 1: Remove .NET Framework 3.5 from the computer.
To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, copy and paste (or type) the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER:
appwiz.cpl
2. In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, click Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, and then click Remove.
3. Click Yes to remove the .NET Framework 3.5 software.
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 to remove other versions of the .NET Framework in descending order.
Note In step 3, select the appropriate version of the .NET Framework in the Add or Remove Programs dialog box.

Step 2: Rename the .NET Framework folder
To do this, follow these steps:

1. In Windows Explorer, locate the following folder:
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET
2. Locate the Framework folder, and then rename the folder as FrameworkOLD.

After you remove the .NET Framework and rename the Framework folder, follow the procedure in Method 2 to install the latest version of the .NET Framework.

thanks, one follow-up
Jul 26, 2009 8:49AM PDT

Thanks you for that response, I'm sure it would have taken both things: .NET and the Zune fix. However, my computer does not have enough space left on C-drive to upload the .NET service pack. It's time to buy a new one, which leads to my follow-up: I surf the net, bank online, make purchases, occasionally watch movies or news videos, and that's about it. Amazon has a popular deal gong on a HP machine wiht Windows XP. That's not the oD that had eveyone going crazy about security and other problems? I'm looking at:

Compaq CQ2009F Desktop PC
L2 cache 512K
SDRAM (?) 1G
hard drive 160G

thoughts, suggestions or advice?

thanks again
