Let's see what NTSC is. That's called 480p by some some the needed line count is all of ... 480. On one scan line we might want 700 or so pixels. Even if I give 1 pixel for R G and B (yes, you can correct me on that) that's all of 1.008 megapixels.
The recording pixels are noted as 690,000 so as you play with scan lines and pixel counts for NTSC you find it's about the right number.

I have a ZR850 and I know it has a 1.07 MP CCD but i found the specifications on a few websites for the ZR850 that have me kind of worried as to whether 850 users are really getting 1.07 MP.
# Number of recording pixels: Tape: 4:3, approx. 690,000 pixels; 16:9 (IS off), approx. 710,000 pixels; 16:9 (IS on), approx. 550,000 pixels; card: approx. 800,000 pixels
# Dimensions (WxHxD): 2.2 x 3.6 x 4.7 in./5.7 x 9.2 x 11.9 cm
why is 4:3 tap recording on 690,000 pixels shouldnt that be 1.07 MP?
