Zoom using mouse wheel

Win 7; Office 2007; Microsoft wireless laser mouse 5000.

I recently replace my Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse (mouse wheel came apart).

I am not now able to use the Control-Mouse wheel combination to zoom in on Word.

Is there a way to activate that feature?

Also, when I read posts on this forum, the text is very small and an almost-invisible light gray. Can I enhance contrast?
