Question

Zoom mode problem with 50PN6500?

Feb 12, 2014 10:53PM PST

Just got this TV a week ago and want to have full screen viewing when watching dvds. So, tried using zoom mode for aspect ratio and that gives me a single black bar at the bottom of the screen, not at the top. Is this normal for this set? Manual states that zoom mode will fill the screen. Thanks for any help or suggestions!

I'm going with nothing wrong here.

As DVD players can be composite video, HDMI and more then what you get on screen can vary and include what you are seeing. For me I used an Upconverting DVD player that outputs on HDMI and it works around some of the issues of SD playback.

Zoom with LG 50PN6500

Thanks for the input! I've actually tried 2 different blu-ray players and my old dvd player (up converting) all via hdmi connection with the same problem. LG sent a tech who replaced the main board which made no difference. Frustrating in that I'd like to view full screen to avoid plasma burn in for the first 100 hours or so. Streaming services like Netflix, etc. don't exhibit this problem.

Nice indictment of the industry.

Some write it was not planned well. Most Plasma do some image shifting to alleviate the issue but it appears LG didn't

Good luck in your search.

Just curious, but...

how many zoom mode does this tv have? I have an LG, however it's not a plasma though. On this tv, "zoom" has 4 sitting (left, right, up, and down) and then there's "zoom 1" which expand to fill the whole screen. Of course I would think the tech should know all about these thing...which tells me maybe there's no hope, sorry.

Zoom
Feb 23, 2014 10:05PM PST

This TV has two zoom modes; Zoom - which is supposed to fill the screen and Cinema Zoom 1 - which seems to be the same as 16:9 to me. The manual that comes with this set is pretty much useless. Does not specify what each mode is supposed to do. Does not cover any of the various menu options in the set up menus. Guess that saves paper but is very frustrating!

I rarely use the player so another look found I didn't use Zoom on the HDTV but on the DVD player. It's some upconverting model you can't find any longer but I read here you are trying to zoom on the TV. Try it on the player?

Zoom on LG 50PN6500
Feb 26, 2014 2:57AM PST

Thanks for the reply! I have tried every possible combination of settings on both the player and the TV to no avail. The BR player has a "full screen" setting but that didn't change anything. My old upconverting DVD player does not have a zoom mode but I get the same result on the TV.

Has anyone had any luck getting answers from LG? Latest email suggesting they send a service person again. He's been here twice and replaced the main board which is all he said could be done to the TV. He suggested maybe the bar at the bottom was "normal." Ideally, would love to get someone at LG to actually play a DVD in zoom setting on this model and see what happens!

Thanks again!

LG called
Feb 26, 2014 5:03AM PST

So, got a call from LG tech dept. They have an android app that lets them view the tv screen via the phone camera. Anyway, now I get the bottom black band on movies through Netflix streaming as well which I didn't have before. So, something is not right. They took pix of the screen and said they would get back to me. The tech said he hasn't seen this previously.
