Zoom lens stuck and telephoto lens won't focus.

I own a Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ18 camera, and for Christmas, I was given a Professional HD MD II DSLR MC AF 4.5X Telephoto Lens and an adapter to fit the lens to my camera.

Now I have two problems.

First, I haven't been able to focus the telephoto lens when the camera zoom lens is fully extended. (I did change the conversion setting to telephoto in the menu.)

Second, the zoom lens on my camera will now only go from maybe 9x to 18x zoom. It will not zoom back all the way.

telephoto off

I turned the telephoto setting off in the menu, and the lens will zoom back all the way with it off. But before I did that, I was pushing on the lens, and heard a little click or something, and now the lens doesn't look like it physically comes out as far as it did, though it still seems to zoom from 1x to 18x.

Conversion Lens

In reply to: Zoom lens stuck and telephoto lens won't focus.

There is something way wrong here.

The Panasonic Brand tele-conversion lens is rated at 1.7 magnification.

That means you can zoom to about 30X. (18 x 1.7)
You can find other brands that are rated at 2.0 (36X)

I have never heard of using a 4.5 tele-conversion lens.
That would give you a zoom of 81X. (18 x 4.5)

Even with 30X, you must use a tripod to support the camera; with 81X you would need a very sturdy tripod and even then, I doubt the camera could ever achieve focus lock if you even breathe on the camera, due to camera shake.

A 4.5 magnification lens is beyond the realm of reason.

With a conversion lens, if you want to cut it back to 9x to 18X zoom, you must remove the conversion lens.

Hey thanks for the reply. I don't know much about telephoto lenses, obviously. This lens was sold on ebay along with an adapter to fit it to this camera--I didn't know this camera would not support a 4.5x lens.

For future reference, if and when I get a new camera, what kind of camera could I use this lens on?

Finding a camera for a conversion lens.

I have never encountered a 4.5 tele-conversion lens.
None of the major camera makers offer such a lens.
It could possibly be used on a camera with a 3X or 4X lens.
But not many cameras with 3X or 4X lenses have mountings or adapters for conversion lenses.

I would not get my hopes up for using that conversion lens on any digital camera.
I seriously doubt that you will find the optical quality satisfactory.

You may have to chalk it up to one of life's mistakes.
