Thanks ORASIS and C. Thunell for your responses.

On my Win98 comp, I did as Glenn Lawson suggested and did a "clean install". See my "so much for paintball heaven" post here.

On our WinXP comp, I simply "installed over the top of 3.7.202 and as far as I know, all is ok.

I may have to start all over on my old Win98 since this new version is NOT remembering the programs for net access as it SUPPOSE to do.

Clean Installation?
Nov 19, 2003 11:03PM PST

I strongly disagree with those who advocate a clean installation of Zone Alarm! It makes you go over all those alerts again and you have to hit the "don't ask me again" and then yes or no. I usually install every program from scratch, but when it comes to Zone Alarm I don't see any reasons. It's like uninstalling NAV because you are updating your virus status... I am using ZAPro and that may be a littel different, but so far no problems at all here! Everything works just perfect! I don't even notice that I have an upgraded version of it!

BTW. If you are driving from one point to another and you are in between the two points, you fill up gas and you keep driving, don't you? OK, so why would you go back and start the journey over again? Wink

BTW. I love my wife more than ever!

Re:ZoneAlarm version 2.6.088

Some time ago, when I upgraded ZA, I was having trouble with a dialing out pop up box. It was evidently a bug in the upgraded version and I was advised to go back to my previous version, as above.

Should I just continue to leave things as they are or do any upgrading? (Free version). I always prefer not to do upgrades as invariably they cause problems.

Win 98se on pc.

Thanks.

Personal decision! but...

generally updates contain improvements and for that reason it seems the thing to do. Your version is getting rather old now.

IMHO I would!

Pat, Have You Checked ??

...at the ZoneLabs forum. Here's a link:

http://forums.zonelabs.com/zonelabs

Check in each one of the separate forums, especially the "Installation, Uninstall, and Upgrade" forum. You should be able to get a decent idea of how well it's installing.

On my previous Win98 computer, which I recently gave to my daughter for school, the free ZA 3.7.211 version worked great on my dial-up and continues to do so. (No connection window pop-up like on previous versions.)I just put the new 4.5 version on my new Windows XP and it works fine, so far. I'm not sure whether I will upgrade to the newest on the Win98 machine, but I'll think about it.

Use what works for you, but understand that the older versions, such as yours develop "holes" that the hackers can get through easier. Just a thought. And if you've got the "old" version, you should be able to uninstall the new one if something doesn't work right.

Hope this helps.

I checked the "Shields Up" and everything came through as "stealth" mode: no pings getting through.

It looks as if everything is working well, so I'll stall for a bit on this.

I wanted another opinion, then what did I do - nothing. Happy tsk.

Thanks guys.

Re:ZoneAlarm version 4.5.530.0

I used the free version (3&4) of ZA with no problems. I thought I'd try the update to the trial Pro (4.5) (because of the added features). I am running through a proxy, and can't do much without either shutting down ZA or the proxy. I couldn't even login to this forum, without shutting down one of them. Also, I couldn't use Windows Update, or Earthlink's Update App.
I have read in other forums that others are having the same problem, but have not seen any fixes(?).

Spotted, Have You Checked ???

The Zonelabs forum at the link below:

http://forums.zonelabs.com/zonelabs

I've noticed a few discussions about the new ZA 4.5 version and Proxies, but most aren't having problems. Make sure to view the "Installation, Uninstall, and Upgrade" forum.

Hope this helps.

So much for paintball heaven...

I may have to totally uninstall and start from scratch or go back to the 3.7.211 version that was working just fine for me since this new version is NOT remembering the programs I've told it to remember for access to the net. Sad Sad Sad

When will I ever learn???????????

William, I think you are jinxed! :(
Nov 20, 2003 9:25AM PST

Sorry to hear about that... mine is performing just find without a hiccup.

If you uninstall go into the reigstry and remove (carefully) all remnants of ZoneAlarm before installing the older version again. For safety first make a backup of the registry before deleting anything.

Get rid of the Sad Sad Sad and put on the Happy Happy Happy face.

Cheers! Happy

Glenn,

Thank you for the tips.

I'm going to keep running the newer version for a time to see if it will function properly. I just rebooted and was not asked for permission for any of the approved programs, so there must have been a gremlin running around in there somewhere. Happy

Great news!!! :)
Nov 20, 2003 10:26PM PST

William,

Glad to see you are hanging-in. As with all software these little glitches sometimes occur. The real cause may be something entirely unrelated to the new ZA software. I will be interested in your progress and if the issue continues. BTW if you are bothered by the Automatic Updates I read the following from another forum as a fix. Looks simple and I went through it except for the final step. May try it later today. FWIW here it is:

To make ZA set for Manual updates only:

Got this from another forum.

Close ZoneAlarm.
Open up your registry editor.
Go to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm
In the right pane, you will see CfgMain, double click that.
Use your keyboard's arrow keys to downwards until you reached 0028.
On line #6 (0028), press the right arrow key 5 times, then hit Backspace.
After you are done the step above, type 00 on your keyboard.
Then click OK.
Restart ZoneAlarm...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nice find indeed. Shut down ZAP edited the registry. Re-Started ZAP, and now Auto Update is disabled.

Another post reads as follows:

Works for ZA Free too.Thanks!

Good Luck!

Keep Smiling! Happy

Glenn,

I wouldn't say it is GREAT news. Good, yes.

Great news is that I'm being supplied with three tons of wool, so I can provide you with lots of paintballs in the colors of your choice, or you may do your own coloring to save money. Happy

I don't have a problem with the auto update, but thanks for providing those instructions for those who may.
