ZoneAlarm Update?

Apr 15, 2004 6:47AM PDT

Can yesterday's ZA update be installed over version 37_211, or should I uninstall first? If I choose not to uninstall and leave it, is there anything wrong with using this "old" version as is?

You can install over the old version... I usually do so my previous settings are carried forward to the new version. You will be given the option to do a full install or update when you start the installation.

I suggest ZoneAlarm be disabled before making the install. Never any problem with me using Win XP.

Best of luck!

Thanks. Will do that for updating the 37_211 Free version.
As far as my WinMe ZA 2.6 Free, can I assume that version is so old that it should be uninstalled first?

Lyn, I Agree...

With such an old version, I would completely uninstall it first. (Make sure you have the installer file for the 2.6 version, just in case you don't like the results. Marianna for the Virus and Security Alerts forum has decided to stick with here 2.6 version on WinME, mainly because of the resources used by the newer versions.)

Here are the manual instructions I use for uninstalling ZoneAlarm. Although geared towared ZA PRO, it works well for the free version as well. It is best if ZA is completely shut down prior to uninstalling. Do this by opening the program console, then UNCHECKING the box to "Load ZoneAlarm at Start Up", then restart the computer. You can now start by uninstalling from the "Add/Remove Programs" section.:

And if you need a copy of the old 2.6 version of ZA, here's a link where you can get it:

Hope this helps.

Thank you, Grif. I had no problems with a clean install, and because of your excellent instructions in the past, I was comfortable doing a little dusting and cleaning in the registry as well.

Re:ZoneAlarm Update? - Had Problems

I updated over the existing Zone Alarm on XP and ran into problems.

I have done this in the past with no problems, but not this time.

It left me with just one Control Center page and that was blank.

Had to remove Zone Alarm and then install new Zone Alarm.

What went wrong? - I don't know.

It works OK now with the new install.

Hmmm....as I recall when installing it asked to the effect if you wanted to have a 'clean' install which erased the old or if you wanted to install using your old self settings. I put the dot in the box for clean install and noticed it did erase the icons I had before installing the new program.
Selected the 'clean' for my WinXP and Win98se puters with no problems.

John, does this mean...
Apr 17, 2004 10:04AM PDT

I should do a "clean install" on the XP that now is using v.3.7_211 rather than doing an update?

Lyn, Just My Opinion...
Apr 17, 2004 1:24PM PDT

...but when a change in numbered versions occurs, (from 3.x to 4.x, etc.) I do a "clean install" by uninstalling the previous version first. I'm not sure it has much basis, but I preferring to start from scratch in such cases. I just installed the newest version "over the top" from 4.5.xxxx to 4.5.xxxx, but if i were going from 2.x or 3.x to the newest, I believe I would do a complete uninstall first.

I'm not sure this is what you wanted to hear, but that's how I do it.

Hope this helps.

I had 4.0***** and downloaded the trial Zonealarm Pro
What a mess can not reload 4.0 nor load new version. Keep getting can not turn off TrueVector Service
