ZoneAlarm Free issue

I've used ZA free for sometime and really like it. The only caveat is the frequent updates that require huge d/l and on a dail-up system is far too long. So, the last update in a 45mb size, I just put it off, until i could get to it. Now, I pay the price or as this is the result.......

I could no longer stay online on iniital log-on with my ISP. It simply got there and hang and then time-out. I tried reloading the ISP s/w &browser s/w but it seemed not work this time as it did in other past cases. Finally, I disabled ZA free, enabled XP own firewall and it flew into action. No longer hindered it responded like it always did. I will now get the latest ZA u[date and reload it again. I just wish updates were more than, smaller and total rehashed pgms. with updates included as ZA seems to be doing. I like to point out, MS update service was on and after *maybe* it cuased my ZA problems as it seemed the next time I tried to enter the WWW, it started as above, well it seemed so.

Any thoughts or similar results???

TIA -----Willy Happy

Think about what a firewall does.

Why would it need such an update? It's not like your antivirus that needs definitions and more.

Microsoft changes to their OS. But underneath the firewall does not need updates like an AV program. Given MS's behemoth updates, ZA's are quite small.

Just a note on ZA free. It used to be before ZA got brought out, that updates were within the 1mb range or so. After that, it got so bloated that I came to the conclusion as being a free version it was d/l'ing lots more of something else. Basically, its the advertisements of the other features and Pro versions plus any animated info, etc.. I guess that' the part you pay(in freebie) to have to go though the d/l.

As for original post and problem, it was resolved when a MS patch KB951748 got crossed wires with ZA and rendered a glitch. That patch has been removed as per ZA instructions at least for now. Also, posted info here after I read similar thread, it pays to come here. Happy adios -----Willy
