zonealarm and netgear wgr614 - conflict

Dec 15, 2005 10:39PM PST

Greetings all,

I recently purchased a NETGEAR WGR614 wireless router. Soon after installing it, I began to have intermittent connectivity problems. Sometimes I would be able to access the Internet and sometime I wouldn't. On my main PC, I disconnected its network cable from the router and connected it directly to the DSL modem. Everything worked fine; I had no connectivity problems at all.

Because of the periodic connectivity problems when using the router, I followed the directions on the NETGEAR website for "Internet Connection Drops Repeatedly." This procedure didn't work at all.

This morning I thought the connectivity may be due to a conflict between the router and Zonealarm (the free version). Low and behold, after I disabled the firewall, I was able to access the Internet via the router. However, now I have no outbound traffic/transmission protection. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to fix this conflict? I didn't have this problem when using my old wired Linksys router. I need to have a software firewall on my PCs, but want to use the new wireless NETGEAR router.

I am running Windows XP Home on a Gateway P4 1.7GHz with 512MB SDRAM.

Thanks in advance,
Jason

Thank you for the info links. I checked the configuration for ZoneAlarm. Server rights for ''Generic Host Process'' were allowed, but the Adapter Subnet's (Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection) Zone was set to ''Internet.'' I changed this to ''Trusted,'' and that seems to have corrected the problem for now. Hopefully, this is a long term solution.

Thanks again; I really appreciate it!

Jason
