Zone Alarms in use with Avast

Aug 25, 2004 9:54AM PDT

Hi there - My nortons recently expired and I have downloaded the free home version of Avast Antivirus. I have the free version of zone alarms on my system; unfortunately Zone Alarms does not recognize that I am using an antivirus program. As a result ZA indicates that I do not have antivirus protection. Is this a normal response from ZA - do they not recognize Avast as protection? Is there a possibility that I have not properly loaded AVAST. Is this normal and if so is there anything else that I should do or be made aware of. I am running windows xp home version.
As always - appreciate you expertise and guidance.

Colleen,

You are not alone. It sounds like you are using the newest version 5 of ZA which has had a number of problems. Many glitches have shown up on quite a few computers and as a result, many users are reverting back to the 4.5.594 version of ZoneAlarm. Even the major antivirus programs had issues with ZA 5.

There have been quite a few discussions in the Virus And Security Alerts forum. Here are just a couple of links that might be worth reading.

As the other poster mention ZA can be problematic if v.5x is being used. You can uninstall ZA, make sure Avast is working and updated, then re-install ZA after reboot as a "new" install, not an upgrade or use an older version of ZA, v4.5x. ZA, still has it available, just look for it at thier website. As for Avast, I've used it and found no install problems, even if you continue to use it and ZA demoans the fact, the conflict is minor, it can be lived with if that's all it does.

good luck -----Willy Happy

Thanks Grif and Willy - I will check out the sites and do a new ZA install.

I've said it before and will say it again - CNET is wonderful - an extremely useful site for amateurs like me. You always take the worry out and help me to rest easier. Appreciate your help - take care.

Another solution is to try Sygate Personal Firewall. I
switched to it from Zone Alarm and have been happy. Supposed to be a little harder to set-up, but I haven't found that to be true. Just allow everything for a while
till you know whether to permanently block or allow. Of course, things like Internet Explorer 6 I make it ask every time to monitor them. Good luck. chuck

2. Look on left-choose"Home Office"
