Zone Alarm(Free Version)

ZA has a Lock Out option which my neighbor checked by accident and had problems. Once he unchecked this option, all was well. What is the function of this option? Why is it there?

It stops all internet activity on your pc. In case you think somebody is hacking your pc you can lock it out i guess thats what its there for.

rocks3906 is correct, it is feature of most firewall Happy

Locking it means halting all internet activity and network activity. Another purpose is you really want to make sure the internet connection is dead without unhooking your connection or turning off the modem.

I think that the lock option offers a little more functionality than just purely closing the internet connection. It enables you to close internet access from outside and from inside as well, to all but those programs that you have specifically set up to still have access to the internet (anti-virus updates, Zone Alarm updates for example). This is a great option which enables you to leave your system knowing that nothing can get access into or out of your machine unless you have specifically granted access to the program. Therefore, if you leave your machine powered up on a broadband connection it will be secure but still allow your regular updates to run unhindered.
