YPager.exe question

Jan 17, 2006 11:40PM PST

i have messenger 6.0 and while it runs fairly well (no I do not want 7.0 thank you) on my WinME, about once a day I get a message saying ypager has caused an error in XXX .dll and will now close. and it does.
I've checked in various sites at google and they all say that Ypager.exe is not needed, and can safely be deleted. However, since it IS part of messenger, and since Messenger is what I use, I dont want to delete it and discover that I no longer can access Messenger at all.
I guess what I'm looking for is more detailed info about what it does (not what it is) and if I can delete it without actually deleting the running part of Messenger.

you probably don't need it

ypager is additional program, for paging feature..

During installation you can choose not to install it.

So, you can uninstall it from control panel, add/remove program.

As for the error you have... I have no idea.. sorry.

probably not and thank you

well, if I were to delete it, then the error message FROM it would probably disappear too. My main concern was that Messenger would disappear too.

This is the sort of thing that you only get to try once. After that it's either 'oops' or oh good it worked.

I'll give it a go, thank you

one last thing

sometimes a question is poorly worded, sometimes the answer does not address the question actually asked.

In this case, I think it may have been a bit of both. For anyone contemplating using Messenger and deleting YPager.exe, I suggest not doing so, because if you do Messenger will no longer work.

As someone finally said on a board far from here,
"YPager.exe IS Messenger."

remove it, and messenger goes too.
this is what I was trying to find out.

not in my yahoo though... i don't have ypager
Jan 18, 2006 6:12PM PST

maybe because, during installation, I choose not to install all the extra yahoo gave you... just the messenger...

Why don't you just try to uninstall it.. you can always install it back later if you have a problem.

very true, however

I could, but I hesitate. Im not sure I could "get it back" without reinstalling the whole damn thing all over again, and that would mean reconfiguring all the bits and pieces that Yahoo seems to think I really really need.
As long as I know it's a vital (but non-essential) process, I can live with it. I do get curious, when I find a process or .exe that seems to do nothing, and yet simultaneously seems to be essential to the running of a program.
When I right click on the Messenger icon/properties in the program menu, it says, "YPager.exe". this is also the icon that opens up messenger for me. Without that, I have no easy way to open Messenger that I know of. I have deleted the other four from the toolbar, the sys tray, the screen display...

Just curious, how do you access Messenger without a shortcut Icon?

Its strange.... in my other pc, there is ypager..

I'm looking into the folder of my other pc, and yes there is ypager.exe - and the shortcut point to that application.

Meanwhile, I just google and read that it is a known problem in old version (prior to v.5), also there are people having the problem when they use skinning program.

Right now, I cannot continue the discussion, because I'm so curious and want to look further into my own pc.

till then...

from google, there is also a virus

that disguise itself as ypager.exe ... and this the one many people said have to be remove.

Incase you missed, I google using keyword:
'ypager.exe error message'

error messages and such
Jan 19, 2006 5:18AM PST

yes Ive seen that. Im running 6.0 on Win Me, at the moment. As near as I can tell what I have is the legitimate one; if i right click on the icon and check properties it says "YPager.exe" and opens Messenger.
The error messages are ongoing about one a week, sometimes more. I think it's just Yahoo's general glitchiness, and I've learned to work around them. Nothing major happens, so I dont' get concerned.

I did download 7.0 but it kept shutting itself down, about every ten minutes so I went back to 6.0, its a much cleaner, simpler program.
