Which version of Flash are you running? What make and model is your computer? (Processor speed, amount of RAM?)
Although you mentioned you're using XP, are you on Service Pack 3 and fully up to date?

Tried downloading/installing the free Firefox browser to see if Firefox works better?

It's possible you have way too many background programs running on the computer and it's using up resources therefore causing the lockups.. Try the "Cleanup Steps" below to eliminate some of the junk on the computer.
First, uninstall unneeded programs from the Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs section..
Next, make sure you have no spyware which is slowing things down. Please download, install, update, then run the free spyware removal program from the link below:

Next, follow ALL of the steps in the instructions below. Shut down unnecessary start up programs and services, PLUS delete all the junk files from the computer. It may take a while to perform all the procedures, but it will help the machine run and boot quicker:
