"Your Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailable"

Mar 13, 2005 2:36PM PST

I have a new system. It has Microsoft Office 2003 on it. I have tried to open Microsoft Outlook but I get an error message that pops up, "Your Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailable". When I exit out of this message I get a window that pops up that states "unable to open your default email folder, your profile is not configured". Can anyone tell me how I fix this issue. What is the Microsoft Exchange Server? I have access to the internet on a cable modem and it is working fine. I can use Outlook express to read and send email but I Outlook to use my Palm pilot with. Thanks for any help you can give.

Re: Exchange Server

Weimdog,

Exchange Server is a program used in a company environment to contain all mailboxes and calendars of all employees. Apparently, your Outlook is wrongly configured to use that corporate resource in stead of just a local database, as it should do in your situation.

If you post the version of Outlook you have, somebody (not me, I'm afraid) might be able to tell you where that setting is. Otherwise: check Outlook Help.

Hope this helps.

Setting up Outlook 2003 with Exchange Server
Apr 1, 2008 3:17AM PDT

Hi all,

How does one set up Outlook 2003 with a company's Microsoft Exchange Server without downloading all the emails/folders onto the computer itself? I can set up the program but am unsure how to prevent the download. Any assistance would be much appreciated!!

Sincerely,

A.

Why not ask the IT-staff?

They manage the Exchange Server and should know how to configure the clients. Somehow, I think it's the default setting for such an account.

Microsoft Exchange Server account

I would ask the IT staff if I thought they would be helpful. Unfortunately, the company outsources the IT services so I never get a prompt response.

Have a look at settings at your colleagues' PC?
Apr 1, 2008 5:04PM PDT

I just checked the Tools>Email Accounts settings here at work, and there's no such option.

Either it doesn't exist (so mail will ALWAYS stay in the folders on the server until you manually delete it) or it's a setting in MS Exchange Server. And you can't change that yourself.

With outsourced IT services you get the response time your company pays for. The more they pay, the faster the respons. That's all defined in the Service Level Agreement. Maybe you should be content with a somewhat slower response. If they take more time than allowed in the SLA, the company should complain.

Microsoft Exchange Server and Download Email
Apr 2, 2008 12:11AM PDT

I absolutely agree that the company gets what they pay for...I can set up Microsoft Outlook for the exchange server - I know the settings so that's not an issue. The problem I have is that when you first set up the account, Outlook will want to download all the messages from the server onto the local hard drive (my personal laptop). How can I avoid that? I want to leave the folders and email on the Exchange server.

Reconfigure Outlook...

You have likely chosen the wrong type of email account when setting up accounts--you used Microsoft Exchange Server and it should probably be POP3.

I have Outlook express, I can send and receive e-mails. But when I try to send an attachment the above message pops up "Your microsoft exchange server is unavailable", this stops me from sending my attachment. Hopefully someone can help rid this problem.I have recently had my computer upgraded. I am not computer literate so pls make it easy for me to understand.

Re: error message

That's a very strange error message for Outlook Express. One only expects it with MS Outlook. Are you sure about the program you use?

If it worked before the upgrade and stopped working immediately after, better go back to where they did the update and let them fix it. If it did work immediately after the upgrade and only failed later (a few days or a few weeks) it most likely is unrelated, so irrelevant for your problem.

And, by the way, what's your OS and what exactly was upgraded?
