Your advice on 6.1 Audio System...Please!!

Aug 26, 2005 1:07AM PDT

Hi All,
I'm looking for a good Audio system with the following constraints:
- Budget: under $10,000.00
- Room sise: 16'(W) x 30'(L) x 20'(H)
- Speakers size:
* Depth: I would like to install the speakers in the dry wall. The thickness of the wall is 5" so I was thinking of a type of speaker with the depth of 5" or less. But I'm not sure how the speakers would look by the plasma which is 7"-8" from the wall. Would the speakers look better if they line up with the surface of the plasma? Or they look better if they line up with the surface of the dry wall?
* Width: less than 6"
* Height: within 30"
- Subwoofer size:
* Depth: within 16"
* Width: within 16"
* Height: within 31"

Your advice is greatly appreciated.
Regards,
J.N

Your advice on 6.1 Audio System...Please!!

If the speakers are in the wall 8" behind the TV, the TV could block some of the sound from the speakers if the speakers are to close to the TV. Where is the center channel speaker to be located?
What brand of speakers?? If you get that Dennon reciver it will use up $2600 of your budget, but well worth it.
Is the TV to be on the 16'wall or the 30'wall???
This is a fairly big room (mine is 14'x17'x8') you will need bigger speakers to be able to "fill" the room and not overdrive the speakers. John

<...If the speakers are in the wall 8" behind the TV, the TV could block some of the sound from the speakers if the speakers are to close to the TV...>
This is the case Happy. The Plasma is between two big tall windows on 16' wall. The width is bit more than 7'. hummm.... never thought of this sound blocking problem. So I need to raise the speaker up to the surface of the Plasma then, but do they look good that way, John?

<...Where is the center channel speaker to be located?
...>
I plan to have it install top of the plasma.

<...What brand of speakers??...>
That's is my question Happy. I do not know what speakers could match this constraint. I do not really care about the brand names. I only care about the quality of the product. Unfortunately, most of quality products came from brand name companies Wink.

<...If you get that Dennon reciver it will use up $2600 of your budget, but well worth it...>
I'm doing some research on this. I'll probably buy this A/V but I need a good speaker system that go with this. By any chance you know a good speaker system under $10,000.00?

<...This is a fairly big room ...>
It is a big room and I only realize that after I installed Bose LifeStyle 48. Bose is good enough for my room but the sound is not really great to cover the whole room, besides Bose System has some technical problems. I guess I must resell it on EBay.

Thanks for your advice, John.

In-Walls? Are you sure you want those?
Aug 26, 2005 4:29AM PDT

I think that in-wall speakers suffer from the constraints that they are under and you end up not getting great sound. I have in-walls throughout my house and while I like them for ambient music I would never consider these for my mains. However, I understand that WAF needs to be factored in to the equation.

However, if you don't find in-wall speakers that you like, you might want to consider Magnepans (www.magnepan.com) These mount on the wall and are thin. They look got with plasmas (at least in my opinion) and get great reviews on sound.

Anyway, happy hunting.

I thought the sound waves come out of the speakers from the front? Anyway, I don't think I want them in-walls b/c the possible problem of sound blocking. They are too close (4") to the plasma.

No WAF in the equation Happy. I play both BAF and WAF. My wife wouldn't care less Happy. wheww... thanks God for that.

Thanks for the tips. I'll sure look into this option.
Thanks for your advice.

Maggies?....
Aug 27, 2005 4:07PM PDT

....If I'm not mistaken, Maggies are dipoles and radiate sound equally from front AND back. You would absolutely butcher the sound if you placed them flush against a wall. They need at least three feet of "breathing space" to sound good. If that fits theis posters needs, the Maggie 3.6's are an absolutely AMAZING speaker for the money (I believe under $5k).

I've Listened To Many Cantons Over The Years....
Aug 27, 2005 4:12PM PDT

...And they have all sounded bright, a flaw of most German speakers. The one notable exception to this would be the Audio Physic line. Beautiful aesthetically and very well balanced acoustically. John should do a google search on "Audio Physic speakers." I believe their distributer in the US is Immedia Sound.
