...check the gauge when you first rent the car, make sure it's already full or they put in the rental contract what the gauge showed. When refueling before turning in, the needle on the gauge usually hits the full mark as much as 2 gallons before it's actually full, so have someone in the car watch it move up to the full mark, then quit filling and drop off at the rental place. Always fill within a couple miles of the rental place when doing that.

in Albuquerque, just before the airport rental return road, which charged about 20 cents a gallon above the rest. Finally it was put out of business by the city on grounds of egregiousness or something.
