Yo josh, about babies and getting sick

Feb 7, 2004 11:38AM PST

My little girl is in her second daycare center. She is now spending the day with her cousind that is 2.5 months older. She is still getting sick all the time. Is this normal? Does it ever end? She gave us all a stomach virus last week. She has had a fever off and on all weekend. How do I know if it is her vaccination from Wednesday or an ear infection?

Rick a lot of times when a baby has an ear infection it is red behind the ear, and if you tug on the lobe and it hurts that is a pretty clear indication of an ear infection.
Sice my Great Grandchildren have been in day care they have been sick all the time too! Daycare is a breeding ground for sicknessSad(

Hi Rick! So sorry to here about the Wee One! I know some are more prone to infections than others and it's a chance we all have to take, but what to do? Keep them totally isolated from all the others? ! Nope, just don't work that way.....if the little guy, gal is basically healthy, then I say "go with the flo" and nature, nuture will figure it out!

I'm sure you'd want someone tuggin on your ear if it was red just so you could tell them it hurts..! Have to disagree..if I done that to my (4 year old) Grandson, he'd be screaming bloody murder and throwing in a few choice words for his Grandpa well he was at it!

Well excuse me, you do have to use some common sense,
I didn't say to YANK on it, all it takes is a gentle pull and if the child pulls away , they need to see the Dr.

It could be a cold or mild flu bug, but sometimes is more. I thought my oldest had a flu, but after her temperature climbed to 104 and she had a seizure, swallowing her tongue which I was able to get to release, I rushed her to the hospital. She was year and half and had HIB, evidenced later by a cellulitis that formed on her face. She had another fibral seizure while at hospital and was on IV antibiotic drip continuously for 3 days. I was in AF at time and took leave, spent 3 days sleeping on chair cushions placed on floor there by her hospital crib till she was out of danger. My wife was TDY at the time. After 3 days someone that Niki knew stayed with her half a day for the next several so I could go home shower and sleep.

Hi Rick:

The unfortunate side of day care is that kids get exposed to more contagions. I'm sorry to hear your daughter has been sick so many times. The fever could be related to the vaccination but if it still hasn't gone down you should call your pediatrician.

Please let us know how things turn out.

Sorry you are having so much trouble Rick. Afraid the only answer is to avoid day care to the greatest extent possible. I know it's not always feasible, but they are breeding grounds for germs Sad The years when I worked in industry and my lab mates had kids in daycare, I got strep throat multiple times per year. Since leaving that environment I have never gotten it again. Hope the lil one feels better soon.

Kids that age are incubators for all kinds of bugs ...

Until they are old enough to practice good hygiene it's tough to keep the children and everybody around them healthy. Daycare can make it worse, especially if the staff doesn't do a good job of hand washing & other cleaning.

The illnesses do decrease in frequency as the children get older, but it always seems like it takes forever.

You can't always be sure if the fever is from illness or from vaccines, but if she is having fever that started several days after the vaccine then it probably isn't the vaccine. The exceptions are MMR and varicella, but they don't usually cause fever until a week or two after the vaccine is given.

If the fever is high (especially if it's over 101) I'd go ahead and get her seen sooner rather than later. I hope the baby gets better quickly.
