YIKES - Win 7 disaster!

Feb 8, 2010 9:40AM PST

After months of reading about how wonderful Win 7 is I finally got around to doing an install this past weekend. Well?something sure isn?t right and I hope it is just me or Win 7 makes VISTA look really good! Here are the issues:

1. Screen resolution keeps changing, from very small to so large it runs off the page. The bottom menu bar occupies about an inch of the page and then there are black bars on either side that occupy another inch per side. I have adjusted screen resolution from the standard 1680X1050 all the way down to the very large, but poor resolution of 800X600 and nothing changes. I?ve changed background and desktop and, again, nothing changes. Prior to loading 7 this problem did not occur
2. System performance is incredibly slow?very, very, very slow
3. System hangs or crashes frequently, particularly if more than one AP is open.
4. Every time I attempt to check e-mail, click on a link, open a new AP, move an AP, etc. I get the message that this is prohibited and I must check with my system Admin. I am the only user, I am the system admin, I am signed in as system admin, and there are no other user profiles. I now cannot open linked e-mail because the system does not recognize me as the admin! I cannot upload images to my own website without authorization from the system admin --- who is me! This also occurs when I attempt to migrate a file from the external drive onto the HD.
5. I keep getting a message stating I must reformat the external drive to make it compatible for use ? ah, the external drive is formatted the same as the internal drive and contains what is basically a mirror image without the OS.

None of these issues occurred prior to installing Win 7. I did a custom clean install from the boot. Any insight, help, advice anyone can offer will be very welcome. Thanks!

System Specs:
Duel Core 3.2GHz
4 GB RAM
Duel 500GB HD

About this install.

Did you rely on Microsoft to find drivers?

If so, it's time to do this the old fashioned way. Find drivers, install them. Adjust, etc.

Drivers updat info

No, I reinstalled the drivers myself - the ones that came with the system, not the generic MS ones.

That's a change.

I found the CDs that come with the boards are often out dated. Your post sounds like the typical outdated BIOS and drivers headaches.

It seems that after 2 decades of Windows this area could have been nailed down but it hasn't.

Ask the machine's makers for what BIOS and drivers are known to work.

Those drivers

Those drivers are for Vista, not Win7. They can be used as a last resort in a lot of situations, but it's better to have something designed for 7.

Also, it's "dual" core, as in plural or two. A duel is a ritualistic fight. You might have a duel at dawn with dual pistols however.

Not to get nit picky or change the subject but

one could own and still can buy dueling pistols which would be a matched set specifically to insure a level playing field in a hardware sense. I'm not sure what sort of mindset it takes to own these for their intended purpose which would be to put a final end to a dispute. I suppose that a misbehaving dual core processor system could be due to dueling.

I don't know

I don't know... Some people who buy those cheap low end HP and Acer systems might eventually become frustrated enough having a duel with their dual core system is warranted. A few fair minded people might point out that a computer can't really fight back, but I say that's kind of the point.

It is also kind of amusing just how long dueling laws were left on the books in a lot of states because no one ever really thought to repeal them when dueling went out of fashion. I, for one, think we need to bring it back. Be a great way to break some of these political deadlocks in this country, and I suspect many MPs from our friends across the pond might have a few scores they'd like to settle. It'd certainly make it more interesting when the PM is brought in to Parliament for question time. Some MP accuses the PM of lying, the PM then challenges the MP to a duel to satisfy his besmirched honor. Tell me there isn't a certain appeal to that idea. Go on, tell me!

But we digress, and really should refrain from carrying on with this topic.

Sorry for not being a tech

Ah-Ha ? well, it?s obvious I?m wasting your valuable time here. I apologize ? I was under the mistaken belief this was a website designed to assist non-tech users with resolving their system problems. I am not an IT person and fail to ?get? what you are referring to. Sorry to have bothered you.

Please don't be offended

This was just a typo that developed into an unrelated sub-thread. The homonyms, duel and dual, become irresistible in a weakly humorous sense. A "duel" is fight...or battle of wits...between two entities. You have a dual (two) core processor system you're "fighting" with but used wrote it as "duel" core. So, in a sense, the typo made some (weakly) humorous sense. That's it and nothing more. I should have dummied up. Sorry.

"System performance is incredibly slow?very, very, very slow"

This was a not so funny as I installed Windows 7 on a HP d4999t (quad core, 4GB RAM, etc.) It took me by surprise that it underperformed a HP dv6 laptop that came in last month with WIndows 7 but I keep looking for clues.

Finally the clue came in when I needed to duplicate a CD with CDBURNERXP. CDBURNERXP couldn't find recorders and a little research found we need to install an Intel RAID driver. That was optional before 7 so installed that and the machine is running faster.

This goes to show us that the rules have changed. Our install plans must be upgraded and the makers need to DOCUMENT what is needed.
