Yet another slideshow software request

Feb 25, 2010 9:42AM PST

I know this has been asked many times, and I have read the responses, but still haven't found the software right for me.

I have about 600 images that I want to make into a single movie. They are from last year, so I want to add blank slides with the month name at the appropriate point. I want to make those slides into scene markers so from the DVD menu, a viewer can jump to a specific month.

I don't want to make separate movies because I want the viewer to be able to start at say April, and then watch the rest of the movie without being returned to the main menu.

I initially started this project using Photoshop Elements 6 with Premier Elements 4. And it does everything I want. But it is not robust and keeps crashing due to the large number of photos.

I have tried Memories on TV, ProShow Gold, and Xtreme PhotoStory. None of these seem to offer what I need (namely, the scene support). Does anyone have a recommendation for a piece of software that meets my needs? Or, have I missed something with the ones I've tried?

Thanks.

Just checking.

This sounds more like a custom APP than some DVD movie or slide show. There are limits to what can be done inside the confines of Video DVD creation and your exact requirements look like it's some APP than a Video DVD.

Does that sum it up?

Alternative solution ?
Feb 28, 2010 5:38AM PST

I don't have something that fits exactly what you describe (never heard of anything that does something like that), but I can offer you an alternative.

In my DHS application I have a "photo" module which allows you to make a slideshow of the images in one or more folders. You could use that for the slideshow part.

It would not allow you to jump directly to a particular month, but if you ask me nicely I can adapt the module so that it accept a command line parameter containing a folder name. If you then organize your images per month and create some kind of menu you have more or less what you're looking for (if I understood correctly).

My software does not require a real installation, so you can run it from a CD containing the images, so that you can distribute it.

But while writing this I realize that this requires that the slideshow is executed on a PC, while I guess you would like to play it on your DVD player. You could connect your PC to your television of course Wink

Well, anyway, check out the software on http://dhs.webatu.com. You'll find my email address, let me know if you're interested.

Found one - Pinnacle's Studio
Mar 4, 2010 3:47AM PST

My terminology may have been a little off. I found what I needed to do in Pinnacle Studio's trial version. I could add title slides at any point in my slideshow, and I could set those as chapter menus. It has the option of "return to menu" with chapter points, which I didn't select. That way my movie would continue playing past that chapter without returning to the menu.

Xtreme PhotoStory and Memories on TV did have some of what I needed, but not close enough (and Xtreme's output was much lower resolution, though maybe that was just the demo). Studio does have a steep learning curve, and it took me a while to figure out how to do what I wanted, but once I did, it was fairly quick to make many slideshows.
