General discussion

Yesterdays show (#1244) was an hour long Apple Advertisement

Jun 9, 2010 4:16AM PDT

Are you kidding me Buzz Crew?? Did Apple pay you to bring Mr. Curry on the show? He has got to be the most single minded Apple Fanboi yet! While I do enjoy the occasional Apple product (I own a macbook and iPod), I don't pretend that I am not aware of Apple's heavy handed tactics and walled garden approach to their products.

Mr. Curry, on the other hand, seems to be one of those people who dubbed the iPad the "Jesus Tablet". Perhaps Steve Jobs really handed Mr. Curry his iPad on Mt. Sinai. In Mr. Curry's mind, there is nothing Apple can do wrong. He obviously, in his mind, has come up with excuse after excuse to justify Apple's behavior.

Please, no more FANBOIS!

One more thing..

I forgot to mention, I did not appreciate Mr. Curry's personal attacks on Molly, when she stated her opinion (shared by many) that Apple uses heavy handed tactics.

fanboy or libertarian?
Jun 9, 2010 5:46AM PDT

Because his views of how the tech industry gets itself worked into a tizzy over Apple's choice to run their business the way they see fit seems libertarian to me. And he has a point about the lockstep views of many inside the bay area tech bubble. The echo chamber can sometimes look like reality when its really just a relatively small group of people agreeing with one another.

I heard him talk about how great he thought the HTC EVO was as well so I'd hardly call that a "fanboy". In my opinion, what he brought to the show was a breath of fresh air and a larger view of what Apple has accomplished with its products. People get so lost in the minutiae of every little Twitter about Apple or the App store that they forget to look at the big picture.

Where users don't control their own devices and are at the mercy of what a corporation decides to approve? I don't see how a liberatarian can be for that. It's oppression. Not by a government but by a technology company on it's users. But the effective result is the same, private or public in this case is not a distinction with a difference as far as end users are concerned. So I am certainly protesting the app store.

Libertarians believe that EVERYBODY has freedoms

in that includes businesses. They can run their business as they see fit. Others have the right to do things you may not like in a libertarian society.

There is nothing going on here that the free market can't handle. If people don;t like their products, they don;t have to buy them. There is plenty of very good competition out there. But running to mommy or daddy (the Feds) and complaining about every little choice Apple makes is NOT libertarian at all. That's socialism.

But I'm not running to the feds

And I don't think anyone is asking the feds to do something about the app store.
But people and I, sure are complaining to Apple and trying to persuade them it's a bad idea. That's consistent with libertarianism, right?

hardly

I disagree. I found Curry's contrarian viewpoint (at least contrary to what is normally espoused on BOL) refreshing. Thanks for having him on. Finally some sense on the "Verizon is so much better" meme that is repeated ad infinitum.
