Uninstall It From the Control Panel
Jan 27, 2011 4:47AM PST

...IF you're using Internet Explorer, that should do it.(Since you didn't tell us which operating system and browser you're using, it's a little tough to give the exact answer but Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features in Win7), then look to the bottom of the list and uninstall it..) If you're also using Firefox, then you may need to remove the "Plugin" as is normally done with Firefox add-ins. The link below might help:

http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/toolbar/toolbar2ff/general/general-07.html

Hope this helps.

Any chance of a recent Java update?
Jan 27, 2011 7:39PM PST

Java wants to do that by default. You might try to uninstall your current Java and re-install it manually while unchecking the Yahoo tool bar...or it might just allow you to remove that individual component. Don't let Java do automatic updates and do pay attention during the installation of any program as to what other components it wants to add by default.

{do pay attention during the installation of any program as to what other components it wants to add by default.} Certinly agree with that! Got in a hurry that time and hit the wrong button I guess.

No java updates in a long time. I have pretty much everything back now, except still can't get to my full list of bookmarks. It will take weeks to get them back and organized again.

The menacing Yahoo Toolbar
Jan 28, 2011 6:06PM PST

I have had the Yahoo toolbar download onto my computer without knowing it several times until it appeared and frustrated me to no end. I had a hard time using Google because Yahoo would take over.

I do/did two things to free myself from this intrusive menace.

(1) ANY TIME YOU DOWNLOAD ANYTHING, WATCH CAREFULLY FOR THE DETAILS IN WHAT YOU ACCEPT, CHECK THE BOXES FOR, OR WHATEVER YOU DO. This toolbar comes included with many programs and add ons, and as you go through the process of downloading, it is easy to click the "ok" to download or a button to "accept" the Yahoo Toolbar, in error, Never realizing what you've done it until you're staring at it with your eyes crossed, trying to figure out how to get rid of it.

(2) If I found I had it on my PC I would remove it through Add/Remove Programs, find it and remove it. However, I think they must have caught on to the fact that people who use computers aren't dumb and lately I've found it can be harder to find in the Add/Remove Program. In that case I go to "View" and check the box that allows you to choose what toolbars you want to use. I just make sure it is checked/not checked indicating that it should not show at all, as if it isn't there at all. It's still downloaded but it won't "make you tear your hair out over dealing with it.

I am now using a Mac Book Air and haven't yet had the problem, therefore I have no idea what one would do if it was downloaded onto a Mac except to be vigilant and know what boxes you are checking (ticking) to avoid downloading it from the start.

Hope this makes sense and didn't confuse anyone.

I find lately

That it doesn't matter if you uncheck the boxes or not, most just force the toolbars on you anyway. I just had to remove Ask.com toolbar from my girlfriends computer yesterday, after an auto update of some kind, not to mention it also changed her home page as well.
It baffles me as to why these companies think that forcing their crap on a user will generate more business for them. For myself it just makes me avoid them more, especially when they are changing my personal setting on my machine.

Uninstall
Jan 29, 2011 12:31AM PST

You don't mention what OS you are using, but you can get rid of the Yahoo toolbar by accessing the Install Programs function in the Control Panel.

On the Start menu, click Control Panel, and then under Programs, do the following:

Windows 7 and Windows Vista users: Click Uninstall a Program.

Windows XP users: Click Add or Remove Programs.

It may take a few seconds for this page to open, but when it appears, you'll see a long alphabetical list of installed programs.

Then select Google Toolbar and click it, and then do the following:

Windows 7 and Windows Vista users: Click Uninstall.

Windows XP users: Click the tab to the right of the program, which says Remove or Change/Remove.

Follow the prompts. A progress bar shows you how long it will take to safely remove the program. When it's finished, you will see the list again.

This workds for any software installed on your computer.

Re: Any software
Jan 29, 2011 12:38AM PST

That isn't true. The correct sentence would be "This works for most software installed on your computer."

1. Some programs only put an uninstall link in there Start>Programs folder and don't make uninstalling available in Control Panel. Those really exist. An example is Eclipse, that only comes in zip-file that you extract to a folder of your choice.
2. Some Microsoft programs (like IE8 or Media Player 12 on Windows 7) can't be uninstalled at all.

There is a way...
Jan 30, 2011 1:22AM PST

While you may not be able to uninstall IE8, you can replace it with IE9 beta.
Also, you can install other browsers, as well. At one point, I had three browsers installed when I was checking them out. Also, you can have iTunes, or other media players installed simultaneously. The only restriction is the amount of memory and hard disk space you have available. This is usually not true for programs like anti-spyware and anti-malware.

Getting rid of toolbars
Jan 29, 2011 7:56AM PST

I am assuming that you are using Windows and Internet Explorer. If so, look to the left end of the bar and click on the "x". You can also click on "Tools" Toolbars" and uncheck the one(s) you don't want.
I am using IE9, but othrs are similar.

Revo
Jan 29, 2011 11:09PM PST

I'm not that familiar with it, but for troublesome programs that won't uninstall cleanly, others out here have recommended Revo Uninstaller in the past. Just Google it. There's a free and paid version.
