Yahoo Messenger Headache

I cannot use the Yahoo messenger at all on my computer and I don't know why so am hoping someone has some insight and a remedy. When I install the messenger,if I go to the Start button on my computer I receive a message that Explorer has caused an error and will now close. I cannot do anything, anything I try to click on receives this message. As soon as I uninstall the Yahoo messenger things are just fine. My operating system is Windows ME. Any advice why this happens or what I can do would be greatly appreciated.

Yahoo's client is an ugly bloated mess anyway, so you really are better off without it.

There are two free alternatives however, both of which will connect to the Yahoo IM network just fine.

First there's Gaim, which tends to work best if you hunt down Windows binaries of GTK 2.10, and then get the version that doesn't come with GTK. Gaim is a bit more work to get installed, but it's the most highly capable IM program there is.

Your other option is Trillian. There's a free and Pro version, the Pro version basically just gets you the ability to use plugins. It's less work to get Trillian installed, but it's not quite as capable as Gaim.

Both of these programs will allow you to talk with people on the Yahoo IM network, as well as AIM, ICQ, MSN, and IRC. Gaim has a few more options, and the Pro version of Trillian adds Jabber support. When compared to the official clients for any of these networks, both of them put the whole lot to utter shame. Try them both, then keep both, or just the one you like best.
