Yahoo Messenger???

Hello All,
About a month ago when I was using yahoo messenger on my laptop IBM thinkpad with Win 2000 operating system. I got a pop up requesting to upgrade to the newest version of yahoo messenger. It seems like the biggest mistake I have ever made. Ever since then everytime I click on the yahoo messenger logo to sign on to the messenger it does not work. Even after clicking on the logo a few times the messenger does not open up to sign on. It then kinda slows the machine down and when I try to shut it there something called Yahoo messenger tray end running hence machine does not shut down. Can someone please help..Not having yahoo messenger is a pain. Thanks in advance....
