Resolved Question

Xtreme Download Manager Recommended?

Jun 10, 2013 8:53AM PDT

Xtreme Download Manager safe to use?

I'd like to know if anyone has ever used this program and is it loaded with malware or other forms of undesirable hidden features? I only saw one review for it and it was a positive one but there was no editor review. I've had it with downloading programs only to discover all sorts of hidden problems associated with it down the road. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Never found such to work well.

And many are infected. So I never use such because what's in Chrome, FireFox works just fine.

Yeah

But Firefox itself is filled with glitches too and I've had no luck with its resume support for downloads. Sometimes you have to take a chance but it's best to get suggestions first.

I don't use FireFox enough I guess.

But if you saw a bug, did you report it? Here's the site for that.

There's a clear system for reporting and such so if folk don't report it, it doesn't get fixed.

Not only that, resume is not a sure thing. I don't want to repeat prior discussions about that so I'll stop on that here.

Try the other main browsers.

Many of the bugs/glitches that I have been experiencing have been reported on many times already and Firefox has been well aware of them for some time now. When I have web searched for solutions I often find thread after thread with many other users searching for the same exact answers but to no avail. They have have since grown impatient with the obvious lack of progress. Some have been calling it Freezefox or Bugzilla. There's even an add-on to restart Firefox when it consumes too much memory and hangs or slows as a result. That's such a hassle though. Some add-ons can actually cause other problems. Normally I would report it but in these cases it would do no good because it's already common knowledge at this point.

I agree with you about the resume feature. Not all websites support it. But I've had trouble with Firefox resume even when downloading from websites that do support it. Even when just downloading an image. There is also a glitch where Firefox swaps (minimizes/opens) windows on you all on its own which is extremely annoying. I'm not the only one with that issue and there's no fix or possible cause on that one yet either.

By the way I took a leap of faith and used the aforementioned download manager and so far so good. I haven't detected any major issues thus far but it's still early. I'm always prepared for the unexpected.

I may try Opera or something. I have been debating it for some time now actually. I just kept faith that Firefox would resolve its issues. I've lost that faith.

Ahh, the FOCUS issue.

I see that in SeaMonkey and another browser I can't recall at the moment since I forget and rarely use it.

The FOCUS issue is well known and seems better but it appears to be related to some web sites, not others and I can see why it's a problem to nail down. I don't see it happen when I use tabs in the browser. Only when I have more than one browser running.

Thanks for the idea about the tabs. I'll try that from now on.
