XPS 400 shuts off while playing Facebook games

Jan 23, 2010 7:43PM PST

This just started happening within the last few weeks. While playing games on FB, the system will just click off on me. The Power light blinks amber.I have to hold the power button in to shut it off all the way and it will reboot normally. I can do everything else without this happening, it only happens while playing the flash games on FB. I've been searching for hours and have found only one other person who had this happen while playing a game. I understand it's supposed to be a power issue, and I have ordered a new power supply. Any ideas about what's going on? Thanks for any and all help.

The system came with a bad MB and that was replaced, as well as the hard drives. The only other change was I put all new memory in it several months ago.

Sounds like heat.

To test, remove the case cover. If it takes longer or is cured then your choice to ask dell to fix it.

Yes, it does

I've certainly thought of the idea that it may be overheating but Dell does say that this flashing amber power button indicates an internal power problem. I'm going to try the new power supply and hopefully it will help. My warranty is of course, expired. So, if that fails, off to a shop it will go. Except it's so hard to reproduce the error.

Telling you that but did it fail because of the heat? Since it cools down and can run again, you could pay a lot to replace the PSU but it would only do it again unless the heat issue is cured. My machine runs without the cover and has for about 8 years.

for your input. I've had so many issues with this system that I'm almost ready to just get something new and not a Dell.
