Xp wont boot

I just got me a computer w/o any os on it. I tried to put windows xp professional on it but it said we see that you don't have a previous windows os please insert on of the following disk: blah blah blah. So I inserted window xp home which was on the list and I said the same thing. So I reinserted xp professional and it said this disk is not valid. What am I doing wrong? I've never had my xp disks do this before

Clarification Request
The usual fix is

Is to start with a blank HDD. There are a number of tools to blank drives. DBAN, GPARTED, etc. All have tutorials. There are also PCs that can't run XP. Always share PC details so members can see if that's in play.

Re: disk

Maybe it was a update disk, not for a new install?
