XP won't Shut Down

Nov 20, 2003 12:09PM PST

I am running win-xp HE OS. When I try to shut down my computer by clicking "Turn off Computer", "Turn Off", it reboots instead of shutting down. What do I need to do?
Thanks,
Ray Savage

What? No history or story? You could use System Restore to when it worked or read the Shutdown Article over at http://www.aumha.org/articles.htm

But it's late here and you can tell more tomorrow.

Bob:
Thanks for your reply. I went to System Restore, but there were no points available prior to my problem.I went to the link you gave me, which helped a lots - I was able to get a "Stop Error Medssage" which I was able to match with "Knowledge Base Links - Stop Messages"(from the link you provided). A bad device driver was given as a possibility. I remembered that I had been having some weird, intermittant video displays. I deceided to try reinstalling my video card driver. After doing this, my computer shut down normally. I guess that the driver file must have been damaged or corrupted. Also, I haven't had any more of the video problems (so far)! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction (as you always do)! Just wanted to share my successful solution with you - don't think I would have solved it so soon without your suggestions!

Best regards,
Ray

You are the solution...

As the subject states, "you" are the big part of solving these problems. Many times I can guide to some hint or list of provable items, but the person has to take the steps forward to make it happen.

Best of continued success,

Bob

SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT

goto run -> msconfig -> servaces tick hide all microsoft servaces and untick anything u dont want

goto startup tab and untick what u dont want...

see if it works then... if not their still is hope... goto diagnostic startup, does it work now? yes? then go through msconfig, and tick five things at a time, and when u get the problem again, narrow it down, and then once you find it untick it and problem solved

if something bad happens or u cant get out of this, go back to sys restore, and go back

now if all that failed when it restarts, after its shut down, before windows loads, press the power button on ur comp and that should shut it down safely
