XP won't boot

Jun 13, 2007 8:56AM PDT

So, my moms computer has gone kaput. ><
It's an HP Pavilion m7570n with Windows XP Media Center on it. Windows update had just installed a couple things on it, and then she restarted, then CheckDisk came up. Well, she got impatient waiting for it and restarted when it was checking something. >< And then it loaded up to this screen that gives us these choices;

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

Start Windows Normally

-----
We've tried all of them, but it just gets to the Windows XP Boot screen, then restarts again. So, what should we do?

Try the F10 option

on the Blue screen when the PC first comes up. I think you will have a choice to repair the OS from there. Make sure you read carefully about the help they give. There is the possibilty that you could loose any data that was on the machine, also.

Maybe some clarification is needed...

I think what lacsr is trying to say, since I'm not sure its very clear, is to put in the windows disk and boot from the CD. When the CD boots, it will give you the option to Repair windows. Basicly, this just re-installs windows without changing any of the hard drive file structure (overwriting other files). Try this.

What is likely happening is that some critical file to windows became corrupted in the hard restart.

Just for clarification

For those of you like Heph_Of_IA, that may not know:
HP uses a boot helper on the BIOS screen that will take you directly to the help screen for fixing problems in the OS. You get to that sreen by pressing F10 while the blue BIOS start screen is showing. HP does not ship a Windows XP disk anymore, so this is what you must use if you are going to do a repair install or a complete wipe and reinstall of the OS. If you do not know it is there, the only other way to know is read the manual or ask HP help.
