XP with shared folders, some say access denied to Vista

Jun 30, 2009 7:49AM PDT

Aloha !

This is to weird to actually ask but I have searched and searched and searched and........

Anyway... The problem exists in my moms network, so if I get some advice don't be mad if i don't react right away,
I have to drive to my moms house, no RPD there, and try it...

So what the BLEEP is going on...
My moms bought a new pre installed PC with Windows Vista so we formatted her old PC and installed XP.
This PC is just standing in the corner with uTorrent and E-mule being busy.
So far so good.

I have a folder on the XP-machine called E:\Downloads and it is shared (DUH)
The Vista machine has a network drive N: (\\download-bak\E-downloads)
I can see this folder in the Vista machine...
Still good right ? Wrong...

Lets just say these folders have been made by uTorrent :

E:\Downloads\Bugsbunny-adventure
E:\Downloads\Watchmen
E:\Downloads\Zion-treasures-of-the-wild

From the Vista machine I double click : N:\Downloads\Watchmen
And get the message : Access denied.

I go back to the XP machine and make a 4th folder in Windows Explorer like :

E:\Downloads\Bugsbunny-adventure
E:\Downloads\Test-folder
E:\Downloads\Watchmen
E:\Downloads\Zion-treasures-of-the-wild

I put some files in the folder and go back to the Vista machine.
From the Vista machine I double click : N:\Downloads\Test-folder : and voila, I see the content of that folder !

Since I CAN make my own folders like : E:\Downloads\Test-folder : and read those using the Vista machine.
Thus, I copied the folder : E:\Downloads\Bugsbunny-adventure : using the [CTRL]+[C] / [CTRL]+[V] keys.

The following folders now reside in the XP machine :

E:\Downloads\Bugsbunny-adventure
E:\Downloads\Copy of Bugsbunny-adventure
E:\Downloads\Test-folder
E:\Downloads\Watchmen
E:\Downloads\Zion-treasures-of-the-wild

The folders I now CAN read on the Vista machine :
---
E:\Downloads\Copy of Bugsbunny-adventure
E:\Downloads\Test-folder

The folders I now can NOT read on the Vista machine :
---
E:\Downloads\Bugsbunny-adventure
E:\Downloads\Watchmen
E:\Downloads\Zion-treasures-of-the-wild

So it appears I can only ready files/folder that are NOT downloaded from the internet......
Can it be that applications like uTorrent run under different user names ?

So what have I checked already :
----------------------------------------
- The two PC's are in the same domain :Leeuw
- The two PC's both have a user called Gerri with the same pwd
- User Gerri on the XP machines and the Vista machine is member of the Administrator group
- All the files in E:\Downloads have the same owner : Gerri
- I linked the N:-drive on the Vista machine using the user download-bak\Gerri and the pwd
- No other users besides Gerri are connected to the XP-machine
- The event and security logs stay empty, no errors like : Unknown user
- I even enabled the guest on the XP machine
- When I ping download-bak on the Vista machine I get the correct IP (192.168.1.100)
- The Vista machine has 192.168.1.101 and the same subnet 255.255.255.0
- Installed all updates and patches on both Windows machines
- Disable firewall on both machines
- Disable Viruskiller on both machines

Soooooooo

If ANYONE can help my poor lil' ma, I'd be much obliged...

Thanks for you time !!!!

Done....

Aloha !

Thanx for the answer. I did already see that post, and many others,
but it didn't work.
(Besides if it was THAT simple I would not post the question lol)

Anyway :
- If I login with user Gerri in the download-bak I can access
all the files as it should.
- "Everyone" has full control
- "AdministratorS" have full control

A little side note btw, I have no "Anyone" ?
Or at least I don't think so. I have no idea what it is called in Dutch...

So, can Gerri ?

Can Gerri walk to each machine and log in as Gerri ?

Loggin in with user Gerri

Aloha !

Yub to be on the safe side, I tried logging in with the user Gerri
and the same password on both the XP and the Vista machine.
That works like a charm...

Honesty : When I log in on the XP machine (download-bak)
I use remote desktop...

When I log in on the XP machine (download-bak)
Jul 4, 2009 5:34AM PDT

When I log in on the XP machine (download-bak)
I use remote desktop...

Which is only a partial test. There are permissions for local and remote logins. Since the test was never done at each machine I'll give that effort the "incomplete" stamp of shame.

Why it wasn't done may be a mystery or rather why not do both?

Is there some reason why owners don't follow the instructions?

Try and try again....

Hiiii everyone...

I got another tip via a different forum :
I logged onto the XP-machine Download-bak with remote desktop and did the folowing :
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then double-click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
3. On the right side, double-click restrictanonymous.
4. Make sure that the value in the Value data box is set to 0, and then click OK.
5. Close Registry Editor.
6. Restart the computer.
At step step four I saw the restrictanonymous was already set to "0"
There also was a key called : restrictanonymoussam

I played a bit around with the settings but it didn't make any difference...

Still I think it is something with rights. Here is one of my previous posts (on a different forum) :
What does strike me as odd :
---
uTorrent starts under the user "Gerri", who is an Admin.
Anything downloaded by uTorrent, is not accessible on the Vista Machine.
When I log in with user "Gerri" on the XP machine by remote desktop, I can read every thing...
Can it be that a remote desktop users is in another group than normal users ?

"uTorrent "

Ouch that's a bad thing. That in itself could use up all of XP's limited tcpip inbound connections and cause such an issue.

Good luck and remember you are in the slow forum here. That is, this forum is rarely visited by members. Next time try one of the more visited forums like "Computer Help."
