XP will not complete Scan & attempt recovery of bad sectors

Mar 12, 2006 12:51AM PST

Hi All
I have been having problems with my desktop. If I try to run the Check disk options in XP the task does not complete. It does not matter if it is checking the disk on start up or if it is during normal operation. If I select ''Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors'' (with or without ''automatically fix file system errors'') then the computer will eventually stop responding. In addition if I try to defragment then again the system will stop responding. If I select Automatically Fix file system errors only the task does complete. My computer has 2 disks C and E. The problem only happens with C. I regularly scan for spyware etc I don't if I could have somehow deleted something essential when removing spyware? I would be greatful for any advice or ideas - thanks very much.
