Your post seems to be a rant rather than a plea for help. In spite of this I'll share that USB operation is NOT going to work after you install Windows XP. XP didn't support USB 2.0 till SP1 and even then required the now-expert OS installer (you?) to install motherboard drivers and maybe diddle with the BIOS settings.
Apple didn't make your hardware and will not help you do this. You are whipping the wrong company. And again, it's NOT Microsoft your ire needs to be directed at. It should be the company that supplied your PC and didn't tell you all about USB 2.0 issues or how to install XP proper.
In closing, this issue is somewhere on http://www.usbman.com

Open this unit on Christmas and installed the i-tunes and i-pod unit. After uploading a bunch of music to my computer hardrive, the torment began.
Supposedly the plug and play nature of this unit was supposed to directly transfer music to Ipod...NOT THE CASE!!! I struggled all day on the 26th to finally get the unit loaded and though the problem was resolved...NOPE!! The unit refused to be recognized by the USB XP combo. After 4 more hours of screwing aound via the " Award winning websites support area" and re-formating, updating (Where all files are erased) and reloading I was back where I started. I attempted to go online and activate the
i-support program, and that would not even work.
I eventually found a well hidden 1-800 number and spent 2 hours on hold, listening to muzak, and when I finally got a human, she proceeded to read me the info right off the web pages...when I informed her that we had already done ALL that a number of times, she dissapeared, only to be replaced by more muzak...After 20 minutes I hung up and redialed...Only to get put on hold again, and when a human finally did come on, they told me I was in the wrong department and would transfer me so I could " Wait in line again"
I told said apple employee not to bother and that I would return the $500 unit, the 2 year ( $59.00) service plan and not bother the m anymore with my trivial needs.
I guess spending $600.00 ( with tax) on an ipod photo grants them a unique position to belittle Windows users? Is it they just dont care?
PS... I'm dumping my shares of Apple while they are still over priced...
