XP update problems

Have been trying to update Xp but browser keeps crashing (IE7) The following is the error signature

Anyone have any ideas

I don't understand technical jargon so could you please keep replies simple

Start>run>services.msc>ok>right click on automatic update services


Could be a virus,trojan,,,did You run any scans?

You might end up purging system restore,but first run some scans ib safe mode,try AVG ANTI SPYWARE and also run anti virus scans in safe mode also.

had run scans before attempting update
AVG anti virus, ad-aware personal, avg anti-rootkit

Nothing found

tried to update through xp before going to m/soft website but program crashed hence above scans
