XP update Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0

by nbwaite / October 14, 2009 7:03 AM PDT

I appear to have a problem with an update for windows XP. I belive my computer has been trying to update this file for some time but it is only now, when I have tried to install a new anti virus (Bit defender 2010), that it has become a real problem. Having said that it has also prevented me getting service pack 3 and explorer 7.

When using windows update I am told that the following has failed to install, Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773). It would appear that the file has downloaded but not installed. I have followed all the microsoft suggestions, one of which resulted in my having to repair windows. I have also googled this problem and found many references to the same update but no one appears to have a solution.

The computer is an iridium notebook running the original supplied Windows XP 2002 with updates for service pack 1. It appears that service pack 2 cannot be updated until this problem is resolved.

I would be very greatful if anyone could help and will be happy to supply any more information that would be helpful. Frankly, I don'tknow what else to do.

Reading http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842773 I get to the section "You experience either of the following issues:

* When you install the BITS 2.0_WinHTTP update, the installation may fail, and the Windows Update.log file contains error 80070643.
* When you try to install the BITS 2.0_WinHTTP update, you receive a "Digital Signature Not Found" error message.

For more information about this issue, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
822798 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798/ ) You cannot install some updates or programs "

Are you doing all this?
