You can clone the old drive to the new drive.
The standard commercial solution to do this is Acronis True Image. But there are free alternatives like XXCLONE and CLONEZILLA. If you're not afraid of the command line you can use those.
Also, the maker of the disk might have a cloning program on their site or on a CD that came with the disk.

My Vaio came w/XP installed. All I have is a recovery wizard CD which will delete everything and restore my SATA drive to XP. Problem is my SATA drive needs to be replaced. If I can restore my original XP on my drive, how can I transfer XP to a new internal drive or an external hard drive? Can I just copy OS to new drive? Can I run computer off of an external hard drive, then copy OS to new internal hard drive later?
A friend has copied all my files to an external drive so running the wizard won't lose me any files.
