If it's some name such as HP, Compaq, or others, your plans are doomed. It its the OEM package from Microsoft then you might succeed. The deal with OEM is to reduce the cost by removing the rights to move freely from one system to another.
You did not purchase full rights so you have no reason to complain.
Here's the links about moving and not performing a full reinstall (a bad idea according to bob) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=xp+change+motherboard&btnG=Google+Search

Hello everyone,
In the near future I'm moving from my current system (Intel Celeron 2.4ghz with 1gig of ram, 2x HDD; 1 200gig, 1 120 gig, running windows xp pro with service pack 2) to a newer, faster one in its own case etc (completely new pc). However I'm looking at going to an AMD CPU (3800+, Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard, 2gig of memory and the same HDD's).
The problem is I don't want to purchase any additional licenses, or re-install windows so I'm looking at ways I can use my existing installation on my 200 gig hdd. Any specific information regarding using this hard drive in a new computer would be appreciated. My version of XP is actually an OEM, will this pose a problem for when I transfer the HDD over? And I'd also like to know if going from Intel to AMD is going to cause me much grief.
Any info appreciated, thank you.
