XP Thinks That I Have a Router

Oct 1, 2008 8:59AM PDT

I had been using Dial-up for awhile but finally got back to DSL after moving. DSL has worked fine since install until today. I uninstalled the dial-up software a couple days ago and finally got around to pulling out the card this morning. When I started the generic PC, ZoneAlarm inquired about a new connection. When I got on the net it seems that the outgoing is working but I cannot get any data incoming. Sites get contacted but I wait for a reply and nothing ever loads up.
I called ISP tech support and they put me through an IPConfig which spit out the following:
IP Address 192.168.10.02
Subnet Address 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.10.1
as well as some other stuff which I cannot recall
The tech had me ping a couple addresses.
The 192.168.10.2 sent 4 recieved 4 immediately
but 192.168.10.1 initially timed out and then sent 4 recieved 3 and lost 1.

From the 192.168.10.2 the tech said that she got the impression that XP thought that I had a router and that was clogging things up. She gave me no suggestions as to how to fix it. Instead she wanted to send out a tech.

I am running XP SP2, the DSL modem is a Clear Access AG10W and the motherboard ethernet adapter is a VIA Rhine II. TCP/IP are set to obtain addresses automatically.

I messed around with ZoneAlarm in a number of ways - I disabled it, I lowered the protection levels, and I reinstalled it, all to no avail.
I unistalled FRee AVG and made sure that the XP firewall was off. I tried a couple of system restores that failed ( does that system restore ever work?)

I have not tried just putting the dial-up card back in - that just seems too simple and moronic.

Does anybody have any idea what is suddenly wrong and how to fix it?
Thanks for at least looking

Modem Vs Router
Oct 2, 2008 3:15AM PDT

The tech guy that installed it did tell me that the AG10W was a modem/router but I would only be using it as a modem but if I wanted to add more lines and utilize it as a router that they would have to change something and of course charge me more. I hadn't touched it and it sits hidden out of sight so I do not see how that could be part of the problem. The tech guy that came out to install it hardly did anything other than plug it in, set up the LAN on XP, and then logon to the ISP site to confirm that my password worked. I checked out the ClearAccess site but there isn't a whole lot of documentation there.

I suppose it is about time that I give up and let the ISP send somebody out to fumble around and charge me up the wazoo.

Thanks for Looking

I looked at that modem/router and

Didn't see a way to disable the router portion. As such I see no error with that IP range. Why must you disable the router part?

Did it come with software?

The software should configure itself. I remember verizon did that and I don't remember if netzero does that also.
