May I butt in?
May 22, 2010 9:19PM PDT

Bob noticed those 4 entries in your HJT log for;
C:\Documents and Settings\Aaron C\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe

There's a few issues there.

1] It's advised to run HJT with no open applications, otherwise such entries can provide false indications.

2] What is an executable file, (Chrome.exe), doing in your User folders? Most application executables are to be found in the Program files folders. But may be this is normal for Chrome.

3] Even with a wireless internet connection, the connection can become active well before Windows fully loads. It may not look like it is from the Notification Area icons, but certainly broadband internet connects early on during the startup process. That is why firewalls load a firewall component before the network becomes active, (eg, ZoneAlarm loads vsmon.exe, a truevector service, before Windows loads to protect the system from early intrusion attempts). So, unless you specifically disable your wireless connection before each closedown, you can't be sure there is no network connection at startup.

So, now your new HJT log.

You need to look at the 04 entries for Startup applications. These are set in the Registry > Run keys, and they run at startup.

Your own Run entries include, "[Google Update] "C:\Documents and Settings\Aaron C\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe" /c"

So Google is attempting to update as soon as Windows loads up. Find out where that update option is in any Google application you have and try disabling it. It could be anywhere, but my guess it is in Chrome. Other options include Services, (Start > Run, type in services.msc and click OK), or any Google toolbar you have installed.

Whilst you are investigating the Run log entries, you can research the others there using Google or any other search engine; eg what is WinFast Schedule? What is SkyTel.exe? What is "ALCMTR.EXE"? One source I saw says that "This program is not required to start automatically as you can run it when you need to".

Go through those Run entries and find out which are needed, which are not, and which, if any, are suspicious.

Thanks However I tried running my pc with diagnostic startup which involves on starting the necessary startups in msconfig. I still experienced this problem

So that 04 entry is false then?
May 22, 2010 10:22PM PDT

I can see it in your HJT log;
[Google Update] "C:\Documents and Settings\Aaron C\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe" /c

If you can't find it in MSCONFIG, or in Services, or elsewhere, are you saying that entry is false? Strange, HJT doesn't usually do that.

Sorry
May 22, 2010 10:29PM PDT

1. I can't know that. As Mark indicated the log must be done cleanly or else the diagnosis fails.

I've now failed twice due to things I didn't know. Hijackthis is a great diagnostic tool but you will run down blind alleys.

For example (and it happened here) "My machine is slow booting." "Show me a hijackthis log (when it is slow)."

You tried to do that but had done more than just boot and run the log. Ouch.

AND http://winhlp.com/node/10 notes a very common reason for XP slowdowns but I never see if you did that work. I know a few will dismiss this because they get fixated on one thing and won't try this one. They can't be helped. You wait until they give up and try it. While not a sure thing, it's safe and corrects a small but repeating issue.

2. Next tool. PROCESS EXPLORER.

This one is even more advanced than the last. Start the learning at http://blogs.technet.com/markrussinovich/archive/2010/01/13/3305263.aspx

Good luck.

Installation of Google Chrome XP Slow-start-up ?
May 23, 2010 2:36AM PDT

I installed google chrome a long time ago and for quite a while l had problems and this was eventually resolved when l was able to integrate chrome into XP fully and l had to prevent Microsoft taking control of the system by remote control access built in to the system, with updates under the pretence of security. I believe by removing it you restore your system the way Microsoft wanted it to be, as their is always competition for statistics from data as you track the web as these statistics help them to become able to get you to firstly have a great web experience with the intention of making them more money. I am sure l sound cynical and this may not be what you want to hear, but having spoken to other fellow bloggers l a told it is possible and how to stop it happening. Hope this may help you. Ian

May 23, 2010 4:34PM PDT

Sorry, I did not know that the log had to be done that way. I will post another log when my computer reaches the slowdown on boot. And in response to Mark there is an entry saying "Google Update" in msconfig and it does not fix the problem when I take it out.
And may I ask what it was mean about integrating Chrome into XP and remote access?

Machine Details. The old XP DMA issue, etc.
May 23, 2010 8:47PM PDT
http://winhlp.com/node/10 notes a very common reason for XP slowdowns.

I'm still wondering what machine this is. Your latest HJT log is fine except it still has the google updater and maybe you have a diagnostic startup but didn't tell. Why not

1. TRY the http://winhlp.com/node/10 so it's off the list.
2. Tell what we are working with.
3. Forget diagnostic startup. Just remove that item and use normal startups since diagnostic startups have been slower for me for years.
4. Keep learning about PROCESS EXPLORER.

I have tried removing Google Updater but that did nor fix this problem so i enabled it again. I am using Normal startup now not diagnostic.
I don't think the link will help because if i unistall chrome everything works well.

Do you want my specs?

May 25, 2010 12:11AM PDT

I know this is hard but I've tried and failed you. I gave a list of 4 things and they are not getting done. This is not like a tech support forum in that you set the pace and discuss the issues and work with other folk and must actively "make it easy." That is, share the details if you can. If someone asks for the machine details and the next reply is asking if those should be shared it can frustrate the efforts.

Hope you see that everyone did try.
Good luck and I suggest you try the Google Chrome Forum next.

Hi Bob,

Sorry, I followed your instructions 2-4 and found this?
When my computer turns on process explorer showed me that my computer was pausing for about several minutes showing 0% memory and then loading all the desktop icons and taskbar. While it shows 0% memory my desktop is absolutely blank. Does this mean anything to you?

Thanks

Sorry forgot to include that -

That's long pause at start
May 25, 2010 9:25PM PDT

Has been traced to many many things. AVG, other apps like that, http://thepcspy.com/read/what_really_slows_windows_down/ is DATED so it's where the boot delays are noted.

It's becoming less credible that the boot delay is chrome since no googleupdater or chrome is running at boot. I'd look at other things.
Bob

Oops.
May 25, 2010 9:27PM PDT

Other things like USB drives plugged in, a test boot with no antivirus, a scan for any remnant of Norton, a look at BLACK VIPER'S SERVICES PAGE.

Also, we don't boot very often so why fix it? For example at the office we don't boot every day but resume from hibernation. Why not use hibernation?

But step 1.
May 25, 2010 9:35PM PDT

Step 1 is about the most common slowdown and easy safe fix there is.

Read replies about it at http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6122_102-0.html?threadID=235556&tag=forums06;forum-threads

Some will "look" at this and think it's OK. It's not. It's an old issue that I am beginning to wonder if I should be helping with. Sometimes I get discouraged when it takes 3 tries to get this simple procedure done. Read http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6122_102-0.html?threadID=235556&tag=forums06;forum-threads to see how others fair.

May 26, 2010 4:50PM PDT

I followed your tips about anti virus.

However when I started up the computer I noticed that when it pauses on the "welcome screen" and I press ctrl alt Delete the desktop appears straight away blank and task manager opens. If I end the process
"UFSeAgnt" which I think belongs to Trend micro internet security the computer will load all the icons and taskbar immediately.

Please tell me if you find any clues from this.

Thanks

Yes that's one of them.
May 26, 2010 9:02PM PDT

This is a common finding and you have to wait for the owners to accept they might want to change that antivirus. Some of them will exclaim "it worked before" or "I didn't change" but the truth is that updates can occur daily.

I meant us. You, them, whoever. The problem is there. What problem it is is the startup problem that has been this discussion of 50 posts.

Here's the deal. This machine is a brew of software. Sometimes one thing doesn't quite fit or triggers an anomaly. My reply was that while I'm fairly well seasoned so folk cling to a solution and we have to wait for them to process the information so they can move on.

You have to try it.

It's a simple thing to test. Uninstall that and try again. For years we saw this on other antivirus apps. I think you are asking me to predict the future but I can't do that.

They is us. We often need time to grasp that something we've used before is now a contributor to the problem. You proved this to yourself yet you couldn't accept it. Now with 2+ posts you just need time to process what you found.

I tried removing Trend and the problem was fixed however as I need Trend Micro Internet Security I reinstalled it and still had the same problem again.

The odd thing is that my other computer with Win Xp, Trend, and Google Chrome as absolutely no problems.

Do you know any solutions to fixing this issue. Maybe System Restore?

What we know now:
1. Trend Internet security suite on this machine doesn't work.
2. It works on another machine.
3. You need an Internet security suite.

So it seems your options are:
1. Try another security suite.
2. Find out why it doesn't work here and repair it. That might be very difficult.
3. Just try repairing it by going back in time with System Restore to a certain point in the past. Success not guaranteed at all, because of the unknown cause.
4. Take the big step and go back to factory settings on this machine. Then install this security suite and Chrome again. Good chance it will work if it does on the other machine.

You'll only know when you try.
