XP Startup

Sep 4, 2007 12:35PM PDT

Hi guys, I am having a problem only with my startup programs. I just recieved my laptop a couple days ago and the first thing I did was to create a restore point. I then should have made a list of what all programs run normally in the task manager. I have installed a couple of programs and I don't know what was added. Here is what the computer says I have as far as specs:
Dell Vostro 1500
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU
T5470 @ 1.60GHz
781 MHz, 1.00 GB of RAM
Physical Address Extension

The problem I am having is getting a couple of items I have downloaded like Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger and AppleMobileDeviceService.exe to quit running. I don't understand when you stop a program like AppleMobileDeviceService.exe in the task manager and tell it to end the process tree, how it comes back. I just want my computer to run the necessary programs and not all the extras like Dell's Photo Manager and stuff like that. I don't want to quit something that will leave my computer open to attack. Also, I don't understand why Microsoft is constanty trying to install Windows Malacious Software Removal Tool in the automatic updates. I have Norton running that came with my computer and don't want to mess it up in case Norton don't like Microsoft's little tool. Can anyone guide me on what to do. I know this request was long winded but I appreciate whoever takes the time to read it. Any help will be greatly appreciated and the knowledge I learn will be passed on to someone I may help.

You can remove unwanted programs in add/remove or start>all programs>uninstaller

msconfig will disable programs.

When you have automatic updates it will always try to install. This is why I shutoff automatic updates.

Thanks Tom for replying to my message. The thing is, I like the programs, I just don't want them to start up when I start my computer. I only want them to start when I want to use them. Does that further help you see where I am coming from?

I understand that Rick, the only thing is this particular time, I was trying to get my iPod Shuffle to reformat so I could download some class lectures and just installed the program. I really needed the program though so that was a necessity.

How about this

Have you tried going to Start

Run

type services.msc

and scrolling through there to find Apple Mobile Device, hit the Stop service and then change the startup to Manual or Disabled? Reboot and see if your ipod still works, see if itunes still works, if it does, you can leave it either disabled or on Manual.
