XP SP3 Problem

by araknd / May 10, 2008 5:20 AM PDT

I have installed XP SP3 on 3 different machines and one does not work anymore. The affected machine is HP w/ Athlon 64 CPU, 512 MB RAM. After the install was complete the machine just rebooting after the Windows splash screen. It will not even boot in Safe mode. Any suggestions for correcting this is appreciated.

I have a HP Windows Media Center 2005
by Daviddude / May 10, 2008 11:46 AM PDT

with an AMD 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
2.00 GHz, 960 MB RAM and after the installation of SP3, I could not boot my computer. I booted into Safe mode, selected the disable restart and then rebooted the computer. I was greeted with BSOD and a stop message of: 0x0000007e
0xC0000005, 0xf77w0756,0xd70D42X,0XF70f128.
I did a system restore to before I installed SP3 and I am back up and running. I read this posting, and am wondering...is Micro$oft going to fix this?? Or do I have to figure this out for myself?

Thanks for all the feedback assistance. I finally got to the bottom of the problem thanks in part to Jesper Johansson's blog. I was not able to boot into Safe Mode at all, so in desperation I removed the hard drive from my wife's machine (the affected HP) and put it into an internal bay in mine (unaffected Acer). When the drive mounted, I searched for "intelppm.s*", renamed 3 instances "intelppm.sys.old" and removed the drive. (I also took the opportunity to copy off all of her iTunes to an external drive as she had not backed any of it up.) At any rate, the HP is now happy again sitting quietly in the corner of the office (my wife is primarily a Mac user, as am I, but you know how it goes ;-)). Thanks again for the pointers.
