XP SP2 - now Office 2000 won't open correctly

Have just installed XP SP2. Now Office 2000 (SP3) won't open correctly. Word, Excel, Frontpage and Access all open and display a message saying Couldn't open file d:\Documents & Settings\(My user name)\Office\Office\Excel.exe (or word.exe etc). This is whether you open it from the shortcut or the actual program file in explorer. Actually when you click OK, you can run the program normally - furthermore clicking an actual document file opens the relevant application and the file correctly. So it's annoying but not life threatening.
Outlook is different - it won't from the shortcut or the program file - it just says The Command Line Argument is Invalid. Verify the switch you are using is valid. HOWEVER - it runs correctly from the icon put on the desktop by windows. spooky eh?

Anyone had similar? Any ideas dudes? (Yes have tried Detect and Repair and Reinstall from the Office disk)

The repair does not recreate shortcuts. Also you didn't share what is in that shortcut. It may be invalid.

What is in the shortcut properties for the run command?

What happens if you click Start, Run, Winword and press Ok?

Thanks.
re: Start Run, Winword and press Ok? - I get the same problem when doing this ie Word opens with message

The document name or path is not valid ... office\office\winword.exe

The problem is the same whether using a shortcut or in fact by double clicking the actual application .exe file directly. Since you ask, the shortcuts I am using are the ones created by the office installation ie you can't edit the target, which just says MS Office greyed out, (I assume because they are linked to the installer package?)

In that case, I'd suggest look at a total removal of Office. Microsoft has a Office Removal Wizard to help really clean it out.

I'm sure we could eventually find the errant item, but it's not showing in these writings yet.

To repeat. Find the Office Removal Wizard from the ORK at Microsoft.com

Hi - found this archive file (includes Eraser.exe file) and it specifies not to use it on Win XP and won't run if you try.

In fact I've realised several other apps are affected - even Win MediaPlayer 10 update file said command line option syntax error!

I have found a waya round which may help you guess what the actual problem is. In all cases the programs run correctly without the behaviour I have described if you use the Run As command and enter the username and password of the user you are already logged in as (I am using an account in Win XP with Computer Administrater priveledges by the way, not Limited User). Does this shed light on it?

Tried a few things?

Another discussion found a cure after SPYWARE was removed. They ran Spybot and Adaware.

Have you tried this?
